News Commentary
The semester's winding down and my life seems to be getting exponentially more boring by the day, so today's update will be commentary on world events. Enjoy.
I'm going to start off my looking at this wacky story from the BBC. Apparently, witches in the area have been stealing penises with their evil black magic. Understandably pissed off, the victims have been taking the law into their own hands, burning or hacking to death the manhood snatchers. There's a Harry Potter joke in here somewhere; I've yet to find it.
Here's two stories about the continuing disappearance of civil liberties in the US. First, an opinion piece from the Moscow Times about how Bush has granted himself unlimited, godlike powers in recent weeks. It's badly informed, un-cited pieces like this that have been prevalent in The Breeze lately, so it's nice to see a similar one in such an upstanding bastion of journalistic integrity. The highlight of the article is surely the depiction of Bush as God. Not that I'm saying anything bad about the government or anything. All hail Bush. Of course, it's not all the Federal government's fault; Vermont can play, too.
Here's another feel good story from the motherland; apparently Russia has decided to take on OPEC. One of Putin's advisers is calling OPEC a "historically doomed organization"...well, yeah. Go Russia!
And finally today, this heartwarming tale from my own Bergen County. Usually when I read about a prison sentence I feel bad for the person involved. To me, it's hard to justify large quantities of jail time because 1) rehabilitation is near-impossible in our current prison system, and 2) many sentences seem punitive. Well, all that goes out the window in this case; this son of a bitch got what was coming to him. An ex-cop and a child molester in prison for a minimum of 12 years. He'll get what he deserves. Again. And again. And again. Good riddance.
