Slackers
I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Economists say that there is no such thing as a free lunch. This comes from the concept of opportunity cost, which states that the total cost of a good is not only what you pay, but anything that you sacrifice to get it. Tonight was a free preview of Slackers, but I couldn't help but feel cheated as I walked out as the credits rolled.
My expectations were not high. The trailers promised a few big laughs, but it would most likely be a pedestrian college flick. Another Teen Movie. What I got instead was a badly written, hastily produced, and poorly edited piece of garbage. Scary Movie 2 compares favorably to Slackers.
Not that the film(?) was without laughs; on several occasions I laughed pretty loudly. But the tripe that surrounds the laughs sucks all of their value. I actively despised all of the characters that were well-developed enough for me to formulate an opinion. The performances were awful (save for Michael Maronna, who made me laugh more than all of the other characters combined).
I strongly urge you not to see this movie. To paraphrase a line from Ghost World, it's so bad that it's good, but it kept getting so bad that it swung back around to bad again. In its attempt to get a reaction, it crosses the line between funny and bad taste on at least 8 or 9 occasions for pure gross-out value. The worst part is that it's not funny.
I spent no money tonight (save for popcorn and a soda, but those are incidentals), but I lost four and a half hours of my life. Do not, under any circumstances spend money on this movie; a donation to NAMBLA would be a more noble cause.
