Why Wasn't I Informed?!

From the JMU Geek listserv after I sent a plea for help last night:

First of all, the problem with the connection between the two computers is most likely because you're simply hooking the two NICs directly with a normal ethernet cable. You need to get either a crossover cable or run the cable to a hub and then back out to the other NIC - the reasons for this are a bit complicated...

So why was I not told in advance?! Someone must be responsible for telling me these things!

Anyway, just got back from Office Max (James was nowhere to be found) with 10 ft. of Cat5 Crossover cable. I've never parked so far away before in my life. Perhaps Lunix will work now.
