Where Am I Now?
The State of Windows: good. Maximumaardvark.com is still chugging along on Gondor when Gondor is hooked directly into the outside world. When Gondor is connected through Rohan, I can still access the aardvark from Rohan, but not outside (not a surprise). My intention is for Gondor to cease its duties as a webserver and have Rohan pick up the slack. This goal, however, is dependent upon...
The State of Linux: confusing. It runs beautifully, but the various services are not yet configured properly. My first concern is making SMB work through Samba; this is no easier than I had been led to believe. SMB is complicated, but absolutely necessary if I will be migrating data from Gondor to Rohan. Once SMB is semi-reliable, I will begin configuring Apache for the aardvark. Fortunately, mod_php is installed by default. The MySQL server is also installed by default, but I will likely be relying on Gondor to act as a MySQL server until I figure out how to migrate the data from a Windows format to a *nix format.
Beyond that...maybe Rohan will become a firewall? Perhaps an MP3 server for myself? Maybe I'll set up an etree server with a few select PMB shows. I still feel like the hard part is ahead of me, but that could be because of the relative ease of Mandrake's install compared to Slackware.
At any rate, maximumaardvark.com service will likely be spotty today, though not as bad as yesterday (it was down from morning until around 11 PM). I've given up on estimating when it will be working; patience is appreciated.
