Talkin' Baseball
Why do bad things happen to good people? John Franco is a genuine good guy, and it's not wise to bet against him, but there is absolutely no reason for him to come back and pitch again. To put one's body through the trauma of Tommy John surgery is a difficult decision in the best circumstances; John Franco is in his early 40s. It's an unfortunate situation, but the smart move here is to hang up his glove. He's one of the most beloved Mets of all time, and the greatest closer in the franchise's history.
It doesn't even need to be a retirement. There will surely be a place for him in the dugout or in the bullpen for as long as he wants to coach, and he surely has plenty to teach the next generation of Mets relievers. It's been a great ride, John. Thanks for the memories.
