I Can't Win

I attempted to begin the recovery process last night, by installing the new hard drive and CD burner in Gondor. That went well. Then I tried booting from the Win2k install CD. That, too, went well. The installation process began, and it detected the new hard drive. Cool. Format hard drive...

Three hours later, I get a message: "The disk may be damaged." I flipped out and went to bed.

This morning, a quick Google search revealed (what I thought was) the problem: Win2k cannot handle UDMA. Someone who had had the same problem got a response telling him to disable UDMA, install Win2k, install SP2, then re-enable UDMA. "Great," I thought, "I can make this work." So this morning, before I left for work, I disabled UDMA and left the install going so that the multi-hour format operation could complete without me.

I was just home for a few minutes to drop off Amy, and it turns out that I have the same error message as before.

I am this close to saying "fuck it" and changing my major to art history.
