Speaker Woes Continue

I tested the 1/8" cable from my soundcard to my sub today on my parents' computer, and it worked just fine. Combining that knowledge with the fact that headphones work with no problem, I can be sure that there is something wrong with the speaker system. Searching Gateway's (largely useless) site, I found what I believed was the document I was looking for: Boston Acoustics Speakers Lose Audio and Must Be Unplugged. The weird thing is that I tried almost exactly what the article describes several times last night, and it didn't work. I have no idea what is going on.

I was under the impression that the whole system cost several hundred dollars (because I paid for it), but apparently two years makes quite a difference. At least I know that, if the system is fried, it'll be replaceable without bankrupting me.

In other recovery news, I've installed Office XP with all the service packs and updates. I'm getting close to the point where I can say "That's enough," and just install the rest of my software as I need it.
