To RAID or Not to RAID

Given my past two weeks, I've recently become very interested in RAID. I've done a little bit of research at this point, and it looks like I can get RAID 1 set up on my system with a PCI card and another hard drive, costing me somewhere around US$300. Does anyone have any suggestions or caveats as to why I should or shouldn't do this in the very near future?
