Seven Digit Dialing

I used to think that I'd never get used to ten digit dialing at home. Instead, I adapted within a week, throwing out the 201 prefix every time I gave someone my phone number. Once I got my mobile phone, I kept up with the ten digit dialing, because it doesn't hurt and I'm not entirely sure which area code it defaults to (if anything). Yesterday I tried calling the real estate office on the house line for the first time, and dialed the 540 first. I got a wrong number, so I tried again with a 1 as a prefix. I was greeted with a recorded message: "It is not necessary to dial 1, 0, or the area code before dialing that number. Please hang up and dial again."

A seven digit phone number seems too short now. Weird.
