Band Camp: The Conclusion
We were treated to two inspirational speeches today at the final rehearsal of band camp. The first was by football Head Coach Mickey Matthews. As he does every year, he expressed his deep respect and admiration for what we do. He also shared a joke (Warning: Bad Pun Alert).
I was recruiting down in Georgia, and there was a coach there who was not too good with the English language.
"Coach Matthews, you've got to recruit my quarterback. He can do it all. He throws with his right hand, he throws with his left hand. He kicks with his right foot, he kicks with his left foot. He's amphibious!"
Dr. Rooney closed the rehearsal with usual admonition to "go to class!" Where most teachers would say something like "Don't drink," Dr. Rooney is more realistic. "I was in college once, too, and I know what goes on. All I want to say is, never be out of your senses. Be in control of what you are doing. And never do anything you don't want to do."
Marching band is life.
