Insomnia: Thoughts

After months of prodding by both parents, I finally got around to seeing Insomnia tonight. I'd heard all sorts of opinions on it, from the praise heaped upon it by my parents, to the "meh" attitude of Amanda, and the "eh..." review provided by Dan. It must run in the family, because I really liked this film.

Amanda had it right this afternoon when she said "It's not Memento." The problem is that Memento was a wholly unique picture. To hold Christopher Nolan to a standard like that is unfair to both him and the viewer. That being said, Insomnia was at least as well made as Memento, and just as artfully constructed.

I came into the movie tonight not knowing too much about it, and I don't wish to give too much away in this space. Let me just say that Al Pacino continues to be one of my favorite actors, and Hilary Swank was a pleasant surprise.

Though it began slow, I was completely absorbed in the film within fifteen minutes. If you watch it, and want to give up after only a few minutes, give it a chance.
