Tutoring Begins

Today is the first day that I'm holding office hours for my two-week old position as a Tutor/Peer Mentor for three freshman CS students. My "office" is the graduate student room, which has no computers that I can use and is twenty degrees colder than the rest of the building. Fortunately, it is also attached to a CS lab where I can hang out during office hours.

Of course, there's always bad news. As I've mentioned before, these labs feature ancient Pentium machines running WinNT 4.0 with 64 MB of RAM. In addition to locking the display at 800x600, install "priviledges" are revoked. Translation? I'm stuck using Internet Explorer and can't install Mozilla no matter how badly I want to.

Five hours per week of this. I can't hope strongly enough that some of the students actually take advantage of my being here, even if for no other reason than to save me from these awful computers.
