First Offense

I opened my email this morning to find this gem:

Subject: 1st Offense: Excessive Bandwidth Usage

During the summer of 2001 Information Technology implemented Bandwidth Management procedures for all users of the JMU network. These procedures are designed to help manage the bandwidth to and from the Internet. The procedure is designed to ensure that adequate bandwidth is available on demand for official University business.

It was found during the 24 hour period of August 29th you were using what has been deemed to be an excessive amount of bandwidth either to, or from the Internet. With this being a first offense there are no consequences other than this e-mail notification. Upon a second offense you will be placed in the second time offenders bandwidth limitation group for a period of 48 hours. This policy is only applied to traffic to and from the Internet, and will not affect your connectivity to any on-campus resources. After this time you will be returned to the normal policy group.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding this procedure please contact Brad Saul, Lead Network Engineer, xxxxxx@jmu.edu, 568-xxxx.
