The End of My Rope
The Mets have declined to offer Edgardo Alfonzo arbitration. Thanks to this, he and the team are not allowed to negotiate until May 1, 2003. He's gone.
I wasn't alive to suffer through the Tom Seaver trade, but I'd imagine that how I feel today is how I would have felt on June 15, 1977.
I feel utterly betrayed by the Mets' front office. How they could allow an eight-year veteran of the team and one of the best players of 2002 (team-leading .391 OBP, second-highest OPS of 851 behind Mike Piazza) walk over a few million dollars only days after signing Tom Glavine to a deal worth at least US$34 million is a slap in the face to both Alfonzo and any fan of the team. I've read rumors that the Mets may now look to Todd Zeile to fill the 3rd base hole, and I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Edgardo Alfonzo deserves better than this. Wherever he winds up next year, be assured that I'll be rooting for him if and when he faces the Mets.
Mets fans deserve better than this. I don't know if I can take any more of it. I wear XL T-Shirts, and my cap size is 7 3/8. Let's go Athletics!
