Flogging Molly

From time to time, a CD grabs me by the balls and says "Listen to me nonstop, motherfucker!" When this happens, I do it; seriously, who wants to argue with an angry plastic disc holding my children's future in its metaphorical hands? A few weeks ago, I picked up two CDs that did this: the Foo Fighters' One By One and Flogging Molly's Drunken Lullabies. Because you probably haven't heard of the latter, I'm going to take this opportunity to enlighten you.

Amy set me on the trail of Flogging Molly in early December. She'd heard about them from theater friends of hers, which automatically makes her cooler than I. Damn shame; she caught up and surpassed me more quickly than I thought she would.

I didn't begin listening intently until I got Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 for Christmas and subsequently played it for about 20 hours in the following few days. One of the tracks on its soundtrack is Flogging Molly's "Drunken Lullabies" (available on any P2P network). I actually smiled each time its turn came up as I skated, and quickly downloaded it for myself. A few weeks later, I couldn't resist picking up the CD.

I've ranted and raved in this space about Carbon Leaf before, and Flogging Molly is very similar. Their Celtic-inspired sound (and lyrics) are infectuous, and I've been whistling the tin whistle lines enough to (I'm sure) nearly drive the few friends I have left to murder. I took the CD with me to UREC with me today, and most of the tracks are up-tempo enough to encourage vigorous cardiovascular activity (and, in other situations, dancing).

You owe it to yourself. Buy Drunken Lullabies.

Comments and Trackbacks

  1. Drunken Lullabies is good, but I think Swagger is better. And if you ever get a chance to see Molly live, DO IT. (That’s an order.) I saw them when they performed at the Roxy in Boston, and it was an amazing show. Dave King got wasted and passed around a bottle of Jameson’s for the audience. Good times were had by all.

  2. Yes! I am cooler than you! I knew you would figure that out soon enough! And according to the comment before mine, if you DO go to a concert…I have to go with you! (That’s an order.) Hehe. :D

  3. Flogging Molly kicks ass. That’s pretty much all there is to it. I’d have to disagree with Jess, though, as I thought Drunken Lullabies is the better CD of the two. Not that Swagger doesn’t rock! And as far as CDs that I can’t stop listening to, check out Millencolin’s Home From Home. I listened to it for about a month straight. I even started checking out their other CD’s (and guess what, they rock too!)

  4. Oh my gosh, Flogging Molly is my favourite band. I definitely third the comment that if you ever have the chance to see them live, DO IT! They are an amazing group. The only CD of theirs I don’t own is Alive Behind the Green Door, but I’m saving up to buy it. Drunken Lullabies is definitely good, but I prefer the less heavy Swagger.
