The Bell Tolls for Another IBM DeskStar

Who could forget the rage brought about this summer when my main hard drive, an IBM DeskStar, failed completely and catastrophically? I certainly couldn't. Today was the sequel: my second of three DeskStar hard drives has gone the way of the dodo.

Of course, while this is a bad thing, it's not catastrophic. Yes, all the data on it is (as far as I can tell) lost and gone forever. But it didn't contain anything mission-critical--just 60 gigabytes of live music in Shorten format, which, while it will be missed, is replaceable. Plus, the nasty sounds eminating from my case led me to the initial conclusion that it was my main drive that was failing, so I did a full backup of all my irreplaceable data more quickly than I ever have in the past.

I've had bad things to say about the DeskStar before, but I'm reiterating here for anyone who stores valuable data on one: don't. The IBM DeskStar is a piece of shit unfit for human consumption.

  1. I think you should forward this blog to IBM.

  2. and another… and another… and another…

I’ve yet to NOT see an IBM hard drive fail, four personally and counting plus two servers at work.

I think I’ll try fixing them with my sledge hammer.
