I Can Be (Relatively) Silent No Longer

I've resisted posting a diatribe about current world events in this space for several reasons, not the least of which is the old maxim, "Arguing on the internet is like being in the Special Olympics: even if you win, you're still retarded." I also tend to have a hard time expressing myself when discussing topics that I feel very strongly about (which, I suppose, is what separates a good writer from a writer).

No longer.

George Bush will address the nation tonight and will say that the only way that Iraq can avoid a war from this point forward is for Saddam Hussein to leave the country. What we knew all along is now official: this war is not about "disarming Iraq," it's about removing Saddam Hussein from power. Which is strange, because during the "press conference" staged at the White House a week and a half ago, Bush avoided answering a question asked three times whether this war could be considered a success if Hussein was not killed or captured.

This war is about power. Such a war is not a just war. I will not support it, or the current president. For the record, I do support the 300,000 American soldiers in the Middle East, who I hope come home safely soon.

Nothing good will come of this war, only pain and suffering. 'Quagmire' does not begin to describe what we are getting into. I hope I'm wrong. I know in my heart that I am not.
