Recommending Emusic

I may have mentioned this before, but I signed up for Emusic a couple weeks ago. I ran through my 50 free songs inside of an hour, and figured "What the hell?" I liked it right away, but I can say now, after playing with it for awhile, that it may be the best thing I ever did for my ears.

The first album I downloaded (with some of my 50 free) was Interpol's Turn on the Bright Lights. It's been in my car's CD player almost nonstop since then.

I've finally gotten a chance to listen to artists I'd heard of but not experienced, such as Dropkick Murphys, The Pixies, and Jets to Brazil.

I've tried other artists that I'd heard of, wound up not really loving them, and not felt cheated.

I've downloaded a few albums seemingly at random, and I've found at least one that I can tell is going to get a lot of playtime in the next month or so (specifically, Alkaline Trio's Good Mourning).

I can't say strongly enough that Emusic is nothing short of amazing. This is what music downloads should be like.

Comments and Trackbacks

  1. It’s free of all DRM?

  2. ALL DRM. Even ITMS doesn’t have that. From the FAQ:

To encode the files on Emusic, we used LAME version 3.92. The import option that was used is -alt-preset standard.

Most files are VBR @ 192k; all others are 128k.

It’s not perfect (I’d love an option for downloading SHN or FLAC copies of the songs), but it’s many, many steps in the right direction.
