I was away all weekend with Amanda in Raleigh, NC, where we saw Ben Folds and Tori Amos play on Saturday night. It was hot in more ways than one.

Ben opened his set with an awesome cover of Careless Whisper, the second time I've seen it used as an opener (the first was the Barenaked Ladies, December 29, 1999). He played some new stuff off of Speed Graphic and the upcoming Sunny 16, including a song titled They Give No Fuck. The next EP will be worth the price for that tune alone.

During Ben's set, I was happy to scream "Short Bus Benny!" and "Fuuuuuuuck!" and "God, please spare me more rejection!" and to get the opportunity to sing the trumpet part for Army and the low harmony part for Not The Same. Ben would make an excellent chorus teacher.

I know more of Tori's catalog than I did last time I saw her, but I still don't want to do a song-by-song review. The setlist is up at The Dent.

Amanda really wanted to hear Father Lucifer: she did. I really wanted to hear Concertina, Precious Things, and Space Dog: two out of three ain't bad. Other highlights (for me) included Bliss, God, Sweet Dreams, and Caught a Lite Sneeze.

Tori says she won't be touring again until 2005 at the earliest. If it's to be more than two years until I see her again, this was a great way to go out.

Much, much later: I've obtained a copy of this show, so if you were there and would like a copy, email me and we can set up a B & P. I'll even explain what a B & P is, if you don't know what one is.
