Done With Computer Science
I've completed registration for spring semester. The CS department is not offering a whole lot, so I won't be taking any computer science courses. I'm done with my major (mostly). Classes I will be taking:
Evolutionary Systems
Amanda brought this class to my attention. Her love of evolution is well-documented, and my encounter with The Blind Watchmaker earlier this year had a fairly profound effect on me. Amanda and I will be taking this class together as an unstoppable CS/Biology force.
Technical and Scientific Communication
This is a CS requirement, but falls outside the realm of the CS department. This is going to suck, but it's One Of Those Things that a Computer Science Major Has To Deal With.
Major Film Directors
Thanks to Dan for the heads-up on this class. According to Steve, we meet during the week to discuss movies, then watch movies on Tuesday nights. I could have majored in this stuff. Dan, Amanda and I will be in this one together, though I expect the experience will be significantly better than the last time we had a class together.
Senior SMAD Seminar: One Nation Under Television
I'm not 100% certain, but I think a seminar is distinguished from a standard class by more discussion. If that is, indeed, the case, it'd be hard for me to be more excited about this class. Taught by the husband of my Telecom Policy professor, she recommended this class to me based on my obvious enthusiasm for her class. From what I understand, it's really hard for a non-major to get into a high-level SMAD course like this, so I consider myself quite lucky.
Multimedia Law
I'm not officially enrolled in this course yet, but I'm hoping for an override once the main scheduling session is over (i.e. a few weeks). Also recommended to me by my Telecom Policy professor, this class focuses mostly on copyright law. After having followed the Eldred case and doing some reading on my own, I'm excited about getting some formal background in this area.

I can’t believe this is the last registration at JMU for you. Can you? Sounds like a good mix of classes. Have fun!
What’s the schedule look like; any days off? Looks like it’ll be a good semester; good way to finish.
Actually, no days off, but my Fridays will be very light. Doesn’t even matter, because I’m excited about almost all of my classes.
Good luck with the senior seminar. I took that last year. Leidholdt is entertaining for the most part, but he tends to say the same things over and over again. The quizzes are simple if you do the reading, but there’s a LOT of reading to do. We’re talking two or three 30 pages articles a night. It’s by far the most work I’ve ever had to do for a class. And the 20-page final paper is no walk in the park either. However, with fairly minimal effort (aside from reading), I walked away from that class with an A. I’m just giving you fair warning that it’s a pain in the ass.
Cheers!
Steve just ruined my day.
Two or three readings per NIGHT? It only meets once a week!
Expect even more readings then. This guy loves making his students miserable, in some sort of sick Machiavellian way.
If the class boils down to doing the readings and showing up, I’m sure I’ll be fine. The subject matter is at least interesting, right?
