Halfway Home

We’re not quite on the other side yet; more like halfway there. The fall continues, and things are going splendidly. I had intended to write while visiting the new Seattle Public Library (which is every bit as amazing as the pictures make it seem), but the computers there require a library card to log on.

Instead, I’m sitting in Aunt Sue’s hotel room in Marina Del Rey, long after she has gone to bed. I’m taking advantage of her iBook and the complementary internet access in the hotel room to catch up a bit on email, fantasy baseball, and a few other things that have been neglected in the three weeks since we left. It’s been worth it, though.

We looked at the 850 pictures we’ve taken so far earlier today, and there are some cool shots in there. There’s no way I could possibly afford putting them all online when we get back, so I’ll have to figure something else out when the time comes. I’ll cross that bridge when I need to.

A rough sketch of our next few weeks includes San Diego, Vegas (staying at Bally’s, reservations made today), Grand Canyon, Chaco Canyon, White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, San Antonio, New Orleans, Tallahassee, Atlanta, and a return to Harrisonburg. I may very well not write again until we get back to New Jersey, but this trip has been incredible so far, and I fully expect the second half to be every bit as amazing as the first.

  1. You probably won’t see this till you get back, but I hope you crazy kids are having fun.

  2. We are!

  3. You beat me to seeing the new library in my own home state, dammit.

I certainly understand the dilemma about trying to post 850 (x2 by the time you return?) plus pictures on your site. But we’ll appreciate as generous a culling of the best as you can.

    Clear skies, you two.

  4. Re: the pictures, I think I’ll either a) invest in some sort of hardcore hosting package upon my return (gobs of storage and bandwidth in return for managing all the backend stuff myself), or b) put up a few pictures at a time so as to not swamp my bandwidth all at once. I’m sure it will work itself out.

Also, Nate, we dropped into Eagle’s Store in West Yellowstone: very cool place. But the fountain, unfortunately, was closed for the season. Thanks for the tip, though!

And now that we’re leaving San Diego tomorrow, I really won’t be posting anymore until we’re back for good.

  5. I favor the former option, for obviously self-serving reasons.

I’m thrilled that you went by Eagle’s Store, but sad indeed that the fountain was closed—I hadn’t thought about the fact that it might not be open, yet. (It usually opens sometime mid-June.) I hope you enjoyed it, regardless.

Best of luck for the rest of your trip!
