The link won't mean anything after today (because there will be no evidence that it ever happened, besides this writing), but the Bergen County Library System's Book Of The Day is Neil Gaiman's Stardust. It's no lie: this book rocks (have I said it before? I don't recall...no, I suppose I haven't). It looks, however, like all the editions they offer come without Charles Vess' insanely great illustrations. The story is incredible, but the "graphic" portions of the "graphic novel" made it that much more so. In fact, they (among other things) inspired me to put together a desktop background. I may make it available here later.

Later: I've been really self-conscious about this for awhile, but I figure I'll put the Stardust wallpaper up. As fas as I know, it's fair use of the pictures and text. The wallpaper itself, as it is (I think) a creative work, is licensed under the same terms as the rest of the blog. Enjoy.

With my introduction to the world of Tori Amos last week also came an introduction to the world of Neil Gaiman. Though Amanda had given me American Gods to read last Spring, and though I enjoyed it, I suppose I wasn't quite ready to get into all of his material.

Amanda gave me her copy of Smoke and Mirrors several weeks (almost a month) ago, and I set it aside to tackle a few other books. I have just finished it, and I am hooked.

I'd recommend it to everyone I know, but there are some, as Hollywood would say, "thematic elements" that may be inappropriate for, say, younger sisters. The breadth of styles that Gaiman tackles in the book is pretty incredible, though. Favorite stories: Chivalry, Troll Bridge, The Goldfish Pool and Other Stories, Virus (I'm not generally a 'poetry' fan, but this grabs me), We Can Get Them for You Wholesale, Babycakes (delightfully disturbing!), Murder Mysteries, and Snow, Glass, Apples. Not exhaustive, and not exclusive, but I'd say that those are the stories that I'd go back and read now if I had the time.

Hell, I'm in work now; why not?
